In my former life, I lived in Pennsylvania and before moving to Brentwood in 1995 and becoming a "Damn Yankee"; I had the pleasure of boating on the Chesapeake Bay. Like most of the people I met on the water, during the week I worked very hard and really enjoyed getting away and unwinding on the weekends. To this day, other than my kids, these are some of my best memories.

One day, with my wife and another couple, we hurriedly met up at the dock to get on board and cruise to Baltimore to take in an Orioles game. Following the game we spent the night in the Inner Harbor and early the next morning motored over to one of my favorite Eastern Shore places for crab, in Rock Hall. I tied up and we went in to eat and a couple hours later, came back to my slip and came across this scene you see in the picture. There was a sailboat, tied up next to me, and for those of you that know me, you already realize that my boat was on the right!

I was struck by the contrasting styles of "seamanship" exhibited in the view before me. Now some may argue that the sailor was so neat because he never left the marina, so of course he had the time to be so fastidious. I, however, know that he arrived while we were in enjoying our crabs. I've come to look at this photo, which I have framed and hung up on my wall, as a very poignant reminder of how we choose to live our lives. I often look at it, and am reminded of my father's sage advice, "Haste makes Waste," or "Measure twice, cut once".

The KNOT or sailor, or the other NOT, which in my defense, was tied by my friend who was not a boater! I won't get into the petty argument here about sail vs. power boats. There is truth in each side of that heated argument, as in most such instances in life. For both of us, upon returning to our boats, the end result was the same. Both boats were still securely tied up. So why have I taken the time to write this up and include here on my legal marketing website, you may ask? Good question, and please allow me to use my experience with FindLaw, calling on attorneys here in Middle Tennessee to point out the meaning of this picture, at least to me and how I choose to interpret it here.

When I first started here at FindLaw, probably like a majority of your clients, I had no background in our legal process, other than in what I learned in high school and through receiving speeding tickets. Most of you attorneys, who have gotten this far on my website, most probably have clients that are made up of either "Civilians" or Business people. Like me, many of your potential clients, have never been exposed to the side of our legal system for which they now have need of your services. Inside, they very much feel like the NOT. Scared, confused, intimidated... and are looking for information about their legal issue. Your Internet Presence will be successful providing it does Three Things:

1. Can be found - Internet Searches are the #1 way people find and evaluate the firm they hire. If you can't be found, you can't be hired!
2. Provides Good Information, or Content, that answers potential clients' questions, the biggest being, "Why should I Hire You?"

3. Has an attractive, easy to navigate Design that keeps these potential clients on your site and not hitting the "back button" and moving to a competitors' site!

Now there is another meaning to the KNOT, or NOT theory of life, and I'll be happy to share this business practice side and discuss with you some of the key ways this can impact your practice when we sit down together. Just mention the KNOT or NOT, when you call to set up a convenient time to get together and explore, "What Walt Brown Can Do For You"!
